As the longest day of the year approaches, many of us feel a deep pull to reconnect with nature, our bodies, and our intentions. If you’re anything like me, I love nothing better than being at the beach with my toes in the sea or being outside walking amongst the fields and trees.
The summer solstice, typically falling around June 20–21 in the Northern Hemisphere, is more than just a celestial event — it’s a celebration of sunlight, vitality, and growth. For yogis and movement lovers, it’s the perfect moment to harness this radiant energy, reconnect with nature and challenge the limits of the body and mind.
Traditionally honoured in cultures around the world, the summer solstice marks the peak of solar power. In yogic philosophy, the sun represents the masculine energy (Surya) — strength, clarity, heat, and transformation. It’s a time to awaken, ignite our inner fire, and set intentions for the second half of the year.
So, whether you’re practicing sun salutations at dawn, journaling under the sky, or simply soaking in the warmth of the season, this is a time for movement and expansion — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Yoga and the solstice are natural companions. Many yoga communities celebrate with 108 Sun Salutations, a moving meditation that builds heat, endurance, and unity. But beyond the ritual, yoga encourages us to explore and honour our edges…that place where discomfort meets growth.
Therefore, this series, we are going to be focusing our asana on increasing flexibility of the lower body, legs and hips. And what better symbol of flexibility, perseverance, and self-discipline than working towards the splits?! (Hanumanasana in Sanskrit)
There are many benefits of working on the splits including stretching, strengthening and toning of the leg muscles. The lengthening of the leg muscles also helps to bring stability to the hips. Better circulation of blood in the hip girdle and the legs. All very important stuff!!
Named after the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, who famously leapt across continents in a single bound, this posture symbolizes devotion, courage, and leaps of faith. It’s also one of the most humbling postures in yoga, requiring months (or years) of dedication, consistent stretching, and mindful breathwork.
If you’ve ever attempted the splits, you know it’s not just about physical flexibility. It’s about trust, patience, and surrender. Here’s how to approach the posture safely and intentionally:
1. Warm Up Thoroughly
The solstice sun does half the work — your body is already warmer. But we will be adding in dynamic movements like lunges, hamstring stretches, and gentle hip openers to prepare your muscles.
2. Honour Both Sides
Spending equal time on your right and left sides is important. This will help you notice the differences — this is a practice in non-judgment and awareness.
3. Use Props
Blocks, bolsters, and blankets are your best friends. They help support your hips and thighs so you can explore depth without strain.
4. Breathe Into Resistance
The breath is your guide. Inhale to create space, exhale to release tension. Never force your way down — soften your way in.
5. Practice Regularly
Consistency is key. Even 5–10 minutes a day of targeted stretching can lead to big gains over time.
Ultimately, the summer solstice invites us to shine from within. Whether or not you reach the full expression of the splits or even come close to it this series, the journey itself is a reflection of the solstice spirit — expansive, bold, and beautifully illuminating.
So join me on the mat this month, step into the sun, and embrace your own personal transformation. Let this be the season you stretch beyond your limits — in body, heart, and soul.
Have a great month.
Love, health and happiness,
Rae xxx
