And now…. Onto to our series for this month:

Yoga for the Moon

Life is all about balance. Whether it relates to work, home life, what we eat and drink, how often we socialise, or how we choose to spend our time, a balanced approach allows us to enjoy life fully without drifting into excess. Balance is not about perfection; rather, it is about creating harmony between the different aspects of our lives so that we can feel healthy, fulfilled and grounded.

In yoga, the concept of balance extends far beyond the physical practice of finding stability in a posture. Yogic philosophy encourages us to cultivate balance mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well. One of the guiding principles that supports this idea is Brahmacharya, one of the five Yamas, which form part of the Eight Limbs of Yoga.

Traditionally, Brahmacharya was associated with celibacy. However, in modern yoga teachings it is more commonly understood as moderation and the wise use of energy. It invites us to avoid both excess and depletion, encouraging a middle path between overworking and under-engaging, striving and resting, indulgence and restraint. Brahmacharya reminds us to be mindful of where our energy is directed and to make choices that support our overall wellbeing. It is a philosophy that can be applied to every area of life, including work, family, food, exercise, technology, and relationships.

I wanted to explore this theme of balance and brahmacharya throughout this month’s classes, especially as our previous series focused on “Yoga for the Sun.” In Hatha Yoga, the syllable “Ha” symbolises the sun and “Tha” symbolises the moon. Together, they represent the union of complementary energies within us: activity and rest, strength and softness, effort and ease. To create balance following our more vinyasa style sun-focused practice, this month’s series will embrace the more calming and reflective energy of the moon through the practice of Moon Salutations (Chandra Namaskar).

From a scientific perspective, Moon Salutations offer a number of benefits for both the body and mind. Unlike the more dynamic and heat-building Sun Salutations, Moon Salutations are typically practised at a slower pace, encouraging deeper, diaphragmatic breathing and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the body’s “rest and digest” response.

The sequence includes gentle side bends, lunges, squats, and hip-opening postures that help release tension commonly held in the hips, lower back, and shoulders, while improving mobility and circulation. Slow, mindful movement combined with conscious breathing has been shown to help lower stress hormones, reduce feelings of anxiety, and support emotional regulation. Many practitioners find that Moon Salutations cultivate a sense of calm, balance, and inner reflection, making them a wonderful practice for restoring equilibrium in both body and mind.

Balanced Soul Yoga’s logo beautifully reflects this philosophy through the combination of the sun and the moon. It serves as a reminder that yoga is not simply about movement on the mat, but about finding harmony in all aspects of life. By embracing both the energising qualities of the sun and the nurturing qualities of the moon, we can create a more balanced approach to our practice and to the way we live each day.

I hope you have a great month- see you on the mat.

Love, health and happiness,

Rae
